Make one base do the work

A week on the Riviera Maya does not require a new hotel every other night. A single base can give you easier unpacking, predictable mornings and a place to retreat when the weather changes. The trick is choosing the address after selecting your main outings, rather than booking a resort first and trying to reach everything from it.

For this plan, research the Playa del Carmen area as a starting point, then compare the exact property's access to the places you intend to visit. A resort marketed with a familiar town name can still sit well outside the walkable centre. Decide whether you want town access, an inclusive resort stay or a quieter setting, and accept the trade-offs deliberately.

Days one and two: arrive and settle into the coast

Use the arrival day for the transfer, check-in and a simple meal. If your flight lands early, extra beach time is a bonus. Do not purchase a timed excursion that depends on everything at the airport going perfectly.

On your first full day, stay close to the hotel. Learn how beach access, towels, shade and meals work. If you are staying in town, identify a practical beach entrance and places to eat nearby. If your hotel is more isolated, confirm how to arrange transport before you need it in the evening.

This quiet start also gives you a chance to compare the forecast with your planned water activity. Keep the next two days interchangeable where possible.

Days three and four: one outing, then breathing room

Choose one mainland outing for day three. A cenote visit or a cultural excursion can provide a change from the coast, but they need not be combined into a marathon. Read the operator's actual schedule: travelling, queueing, equipment collection and lunch can take as much time as the featured activity.

For a cenote, check swimming rules, required equipment, steps and changing facilities directly with the operator. Do not assume every site has the same entry conditions or is suitable for every swimmer. Pick a visit that matches your party rather than the most dramatic photograph.

Keep day four mostly free. Return to the beach, explore your local area or enjoy the property you paid for. Rest days make the following outing easier to appreciate and leave a useful buffer if you move an activity because of conditions.

Days five and six: choose one island or a second mainland experience

Cozumel can be an island option if your base makes the Playa del Carmen ferry terminal convenient. Check current crossings, terminal arrangements and the return plan before adding an island activity. Avoid scheduling your last possible return ferry as the only way back.

Alternatively, use day five for another mainland experience with simpler logistics. There is no obligation to include a ferry trip. Compare door-to-door time and the hours you will actually spend at the destination.

Make day six your flexible day. It can absorb a postponed outing, a favourite beach revisit or a slow afternoon. Keep shopping and packing manageable so the holiday does not end with a rush.

Day seven and the booking test

Base departure timing on your airline's check-in requirements and a realistic transfer allowance. Confirm the pickup location and how to contact the transfer provider. A hotel lobby can have several entrances or meeting areas.

Before booking the week, check that your hotel and two main outings form a sensible plan on a map. If each excursion requires crossing the same long stretch of coast twice, change the outings or the base. The point of staying in one hotel is to reduce friction, not to create seven days of long transfers.
